There were a couple of M-1's that took a russian cornet in the grill doors. I don't know the status of the crew but it didn't look like the blow off doors popped off. Once again the tankers are on the tip of the spear. Others will get their Combat Infantry Badge, Combat Medic Badge, Combat Parachute badge, Combat Helicopter badge, and combat engineer badge etc. but there is still no acknowledgment of the tankers efforts under fire. The Combat Armor Badge was proposed in WWII but Patton was in the political doghouse and Marshall rejected the idea. Meanwhile the grunts got their CIB along with an automatic Bronze Star. Nice article in Armor Mag this month about the History of the Combat Armor Badge. It seems Patton was wearing one back in 1919 even before the Inf had their CIB. A Dreadnought needs your help. I have a claim in for PTSD with the VA. I am having a hard time verifying the stressor. Can anyone remember the two soldiers that were killed in the Combat trains from the cluster bomblet that was found on the spade of an M-88 recovery vehicle. I beleive that this happened our first day into Iraq. Also does anyone have an email address or normal address to contact John Sack the author that was with the batallion. He wroete about this briefly in his book. If I can get a direct statement from him it could help as well. Thanks to anyone that can help. I have been fighting this claim now for four years. Unfortunately, Jack Sack died several months ago. He died in San Francisco of complications from a transplant for myelodysplasia, a bone-marrow cancer. He was 74.
Sir: I am sick and tired of the 34th Armor (and tankers in general) being treated like the bastard son It is bad enough that tankers in Iraq take Russan missles in the rear, collapse bridges not strong enough to hold their vehicles and in general get no respect or acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice while others get combat badges. The latest event to piss me off is in the 4th Division IVY LEAVES publication Getting to Know You section where they are re-introducing Gen John W Vessey, Jr. It says:” His next association with the Division (4th) was in Vietnam was a lieutenant colonel serving in the 25th Infantry Division when the 3rd Brigade of the 4th Division was attached to the 25th. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 77th Artillery of the 3rd Brigade during the Battle of Souitre (also know as LZ Gold) in March of 1967. The 3rd Brigade was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation or that Action. The two principal units in the action were the 3rd Battialion, 22nd Infantry and the 2nd of the 77th Artillery.” The 22nd and 77th had fought on and off the VC 272 Regiment and 9th Infantry Division for two days before. When Lt Col Stailey led us in it took us (in tanks) less than ˝ day to send them packing and loosing almost ˝ of their regiment in the process. I was there on the ground and I Know . The Army has approved a Close Combat Badge for Soldiers in combat arms brigades or smaller in lieu of Combat Infantry Badge that most MOS’s would not be qualified to receive. “ THE ARMY WILL AWARD THE CCB TO ARMOR, CAVALRY, COMBAT ENGINEERS, AND FIELD ARTILLERY SOLDIERS IN MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTIES OR CORRESPONDING OFFICER BRANCH/SPECIALITES RECOGNIZED AS HAVING A HIGH PROBABILITY TO ROUTINELY ENGAGE IN DIRECT COMBAT…. “ This aint the Combat Armor Badge but it is as close as were are going to get. Just a note to the Storm Dreadnoughts: Captain Charles Ziegenfuss, who was the commander of Charlie Company over in Iraq, was badly wounded on June 22d by one of those damn IEDs. I joined 2/34 just before deployment to Desert Shield. Transferred from 1st BN, 10th Cavalry - then located at Ft. Knox. I was a tanker (19K10) but when I arrived, there were no slots available, so I was assigned to the medical platoon HHC with three other tankers in same predicament. Fellow Dreadnaughts...if you've got questions or concerns on the medical/mental/physical issues that have befell our ranks drop me a line so we can network. Who amongst our ranks has suffered from nerve damage...hands are numb, dropping things, electrical shocks in the spine, headaches, night sweats, memory loss, sudden temper over issues very small, moments of black rages where you are consumed by dark periods of anger, depression and guilt. If you have felt these things...you are not alone. My wife was in perfect health until I came home...now she has Interstycial Cystitus and some form of Arthritus, did suffer from a myriad of medical problems and have had to consult with many specialists to get her manageable again...sounds familiar, yes? This is HQ 66, HQ 65 and HQ 77 signing off...spc winters.

this is to spc winters.I came across your post.My husband spc brown was in Desert Storm and has been having alot of health problems.They aren't health problems that have just started.They are problems that keep getting worse.Right now he goes to the VA hospital here in Florida at Bay Pines.They have been treating him but nothing seem to work and no one has any answers why he is like this.They told us his muscles are deteriating,has really bad headaches,pain up and down his spine,has this rash on his feet from when he was over there because he wore a cast,memory isn't very good either and many more health problems.I just don't know where to get help at anymore.Seems like I'm getting run around.Here a month ago we got a letter in the mail saying that there had been exposure to things over there but they didn't say what they were going to do for our guys who are having similar problems.I also think our oldest who is 13 now has some problems passed down by James.If you could pass any info e-mail me at motherof4boys31499@yahoo.com...thanks,MISSY BROWN..."GIVE THEM HELL BOY'S.YOU ALL ARE DOING A GREAT JOB."
Steve: I thought you fell off the planet. I saw the names a lot of great soldiers in your where are they now section. Delighted to hear that you are keeping this up. Tell me what I can do to help. By the way I went to the arrival ceremony of the 2-34 Armor in Janauary when they returned from OIF under the command of LTC Oscar Hall (he served in 3-37 Ar during ODS). One of the troops coming home was SSG Simms son. SSG Simms served in C Company. Bob Burns, Jeff Jones and I had lunch together a couple of weeks ago. Other Dreadnoughts here in Kansas include Ken McCurry our S2 and Jim Dowdy our S4 and John Hannon platoon leader in D Company. Jerry Ellis (SFC Scout Platoon) is at Fort Riley and I believe that Tom Perry (SFC C Company and BN S3) is near Manhattan. Ron Mazzia and Steve Bourque both of whom were X0s before the war are also here as is Steve Fields who was the BMT. Jim Logan BMT during the war is in Ky and Hugh Grace 1SG HHC is in Kansas City. SPC Pierce combat medic HHC 2/34th Armor, hello fellow vets. Having trouble proving to the VA that I served in DESERT STORM funny isnt it? Anyone whom remembers me or knows whom I can contact to get my combat medical badge, that we were issued in the desert, on my DD214 since I ETS before it was put on there I cant get ptsd related disability cause they say that I was in a casual environment, I was at the berm when it was being breached and treated the first casualties of war, which was an Iraqi soilder. Then later the same day, two of our own soilders whom were injured one killed when they were playing with unexploded ordiance, I need help guys. I cant keep a job, people think Im wierd and all kinds of things I need to be compensated like all of us whom are suffering do. Went to the local VFW tonight which got me thinking about the time I spent in Desert Storm. I wish I knew of the site earlier. Was tank commander on D-12 during Dessert Storm. Achieved rank of SFC before being forced out of Army in 1999 with 80% disability rating. Graduated from Kansas State University in 2002. Presently live in Zephyrhills, FL. Steve: This site is fantastic as always. I had a near death experience last November the 22nd when I underwent open heart surgery and had five bypasses. Guess what I wasn't smoking, was not overwieght and worked out daily so you guys hitting 50 need to get checked. I weigh less than I did when I commanded the battalion and with the exception of a wine habit I eat healthy (2 glasses of wine every night). Anyway I miss you guys and want to see all of you. How about letting me know if you any of you are interested in a reunion. COL Bob Burns, Ken McCurry (our S2) and I all live in Leavenworth, Kansas as does my predecessor in command. So guys if any of you want to do this and don't mind spending some money to get it done. Let me know and don't get me excited it is bad for my heart. Steve: 14 former 34th Armor soldiers met for lunch today in Leavenworth, Kansas. Rob Keough, Ken McCurry,Bob Burns and Greg Fontenot represented the 2-34 Armor. Steve Bourque, Ron Mazzia both of whom were Dreadnought 5 when I commanded attended as did Tom Lyerly who commanded 2-34 Ar in the 70s. George Brinegar who commanded in form 01-03 joined as well. Mike Griswold Centurian 5 and commander of 3-34 in Germany came as did Dave Cavaleri who served as a plt leader in 1-34 and a company commander in 3-34. Eric McMillin, Ken Hickins, and Lynn Rolf came from 1-34. We had a great time and great recollections. Rob held his own with all of those retired officers but did not get fed for an hour. It was a great time and we will invite old man Pierce to come next time as well. Anyone out there who wants to meet for lunch let me know. Next on the agenda is a reunion, but I need to know if you guys are interested. Greg

Gotta say hello to PFC Farunm and LT Maas. Still have not found "Hoyte" with a guppie tatooed on his shoulder or Cruse with his collection of Boone Farm Bottles (I think He had 100 at ETS) Good times. No lasting chemical withdraws and I am sorry to thoes who are having problems. I believe the movie "Jarhead" covered my frustrating experience in Desert Storm. Still telling stories and making up new ones.

I was reading John Sacks book C Company and remember the good times. I hope more of our fellow dreadknoughts posts their information on here. I served as a loader in Desert Storm 2nd platoon, C Company 2nd 34th Armor. Hello to all the guys, it is good to see how people are doing. Fortunately the only health problems I have had is occasionial trouble sleeping, and mild skin allegies on my hands. Guys: I just came up on the net to see who had checked in since I was last up. For those of you in the Fort Leavenworth-Fort Riley Area we have a periodic 34th Armor Lunch--regimental wide so we get guys from all of the battalions. Hey,hey!! Just stumbled on this website today at work, bigtime props for putting this together. The memories came back at me like a wall of bricks and I would jump at the chance to meet back up with you guys, where and when, that's all I want to know. Life has been very kind to me after I came back home. A little reserve time learning explosives and drill sergeant school in Ft. Lewis and I finally hung up the uniform. I have a great family, a career that is rewarding, and I would like to reconnect with my old comrades. I have been looking for David Isaacs for a few years now but have run into several roadblocks. I think he is still in Chapman or Abilene KS. If any of you know where he is, tell him I am looking for him. I really look forward to hearing from you guys. i am a desert storm vet and was in hhc. 1/34 ar . scouts. and have been to all the 34th armor regiment sites and have not seen one listing for Ssgt. David Douthit . perhaps someone needs to update or research this
Nice site!!! I was in Bco as a gunner in Desert storm. I often look for web sites about the unit and came across this one. I got out in 91 after we got back but went back in after 911. I deployed with a cav unit (national gaurd) last year and was awarded the bronze star and I leave to go back in feb 2009. I ran accross this site last week and was damn glad I did. I was the original and only member of Delta Company 3rd Platoon. Dan Whalen and "Rhino" were the other two Platoon Leaders getting their platoons ready for the "Gulf War". I remained a "Dreadnaught" until the fall of 1995 when the Department of the Army said "First Sergeant, you have been there too long, you must go". The memories I have of this unit are good, but some of them would offend some, therefore I will not share them on this open forum. I retired in 1998, and currently reside in Geary County, KS and work for Riley County, KS as the Zoning Enforcement Officer and Floodplain Manager. Lt Art Thompson Served with 2/34 from Aug 1988 until June 1992. Served as B co Platoon leader with Cpt. Robert Smith, Lt Bill Morris and Lt Smith. Also Served as Mortar Platoon Leader with MSG Thurmond, and HHC XO During Gulf War with Cpt Ed Saurer and Ist Grace. Best years of my life was as a 2/34 Armor Soldier. I enjoyed reading our history. I served one tour as plt ldr, B Co 1st Plt leader from Dec 68 to March 69. Its good to see where we were in the long lineage of 2/34. Maj Dennis Lee, retired.
